BR Chopra (full name Baldev Raj Chopra) (22 April 1914 To 05 November 2008) born in Ludhiana a district of Punjab was the famous Indian Director and Producer of Bollywood movies and TV serials.
He did his M.A. in English literature from University of punjab in Lahore. In 1938 he started his career as a film journalist. He Shifted to Delhi after 1947 Partition and later moved over to Mumbai. He produced his debut film “Karwat” , that was a big flop. That film was directed by B. D. Vedi, with Nizami as the Lead Actor. After that in 1951 he directed his debut film “Afsana” which was a super hit movie.
In 1955 he started his own production company B.R. Films with the purpose of making the family entertainment movies. He produced and directed a long series of successful movies which includes Naya Daur, Dhool Ka Phool, Gumrah, Waqt, Humraaz, Ittefaq and lot more.
B.R. Films is one of the most successful production company which is also know for the production of the mega TV Serials like “Mahabharata”.
Andhra University honored him as Doctorate of Letters. He was in Union Public Service Commission for a number of years. He was also the member of the Film Censors board for many years.
He was the first person who received the National Award as Best Director for his film Hamraaz in 1968. In 1962 film Dharamputra received the National Award as the Best Hindi film. Gumrah also received the same in 1963. B.R. alaways has the aim to make the socially relevant films.
Like Naya Daur (1957) which is the story of a traditional rural community threatened with modernism, Kanoon in 1960 was a courtroom drama without even a single song ,Gumrah in 1963 told the story of a woman continuing her affair after marriage.
In 1961 he received Filmfare award for hi s film kanoon as the best film. Prime minister Chandrashekhar presented him The National Citizen Award for the mega TV serial Mahabharat. President of India Zail Singh presented him the Udyog Rattan award for the outstanding work in the field of industry.There is a very long list of the awards received by him.
He received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 1998 for Award for his contribution to Indian Cinema.
In November 05 2008 he passed aaway by leaving the inspirations to the Hindi cinema. The whole world will alaways remember him for his great contribution.
